A new chapter has officially begun for Persib Bandung as the club appoints Igor Tolic as head coach following the end of Bojan Hodak’s historic reign that delivered three consecutive Super League titles.
The leadership transition marks one of the biggest moments in recent Indonesian football history, as Persib attempt to maintain their dominance while entering a fresh tactical era under a coach who has largely worked behind the scenes.
Persib Promote Igor Tolic After Three Consecutive League Titles
Persib management confirmed Igor Tolic’s promotion only two days after the club sealed the 2025/2026 Super League championship, completing a remarkable domestic hat-trick after previously winning the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 titles.
Although Tolic’s name may not yet be as widely recognized among Bobotoh supporters as Bojan Hodak, internally he has long been viewed as one of the key architects behind Persib’s recent dominance.
“Coach Igor understands the club culture, knows the players’ characteristics, and has been part of the successful journey achieved over the past few seasons. We believe continuity and adaptation are crucial assets for the next chapter,” said Deputy CEO of PT Persib Bandung Bermartabat, Adhitia Putra Herawan.
Bojan Hodak Leaves Head Coach Role But Remains at Persib
Despite stepping down as head coach, Bojan Hodak is not leaving the club entirely.
The Croatian manager, widely considered one of the most successful foreign coaches in Persib history, has now been appointed as Shareholder Group Technical Advisor, a strategic role focused on helping preserve the winning structure he helped create.
“After successfully leading Persib to dominate Indonesian football over the past three seasons, Bojan Hodak will vacate the head coach position and continue a new role as Shareholder Group Technical Advisor to help carry forward the legacy of success,” Persib announced through its official Instagram account.
The move is seen as a strategic decision to ensure stability while gradually transitioning leadership to the next generation of coaching staff.
Who Is Igor Tolic? The Croatian Coach Behind Persib’s Success
Born on September 25, 1977, in Gradacac, former Yugoslavia—now part of Bosnia and Herzegovina—Igor Tolic holds Croatian nationality and built his early football career as a central defender.
Although he never became a global football star, Tolic accumulated valuable experience playing for several Croatian and Malaysian clubs, including:
- HNSK Moslavina
- NK Trnje Zagreb
- HASK Zagreb
- MPJJ Selangor
- PKNS FC
His playing career ended during the 2012/2013 season with HASK Zagreb before he shifted fully into coaching.
What makes Tolic unique compared to many football managers is his academic background. He graduated from the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Zagreb while simultaneously pursuing professional football.
He also later earned a prestigious UEFA Pro coaching license.
Igor Tolic’s Coaching Journey From Croatia to Egypt
Tolic’s managerial career began in youth football with HASK Zagreb’s academy setup before earning a role with Hajduk Split U-19 in 2019.
His tactical reputation continued to grow after managing:
- NK Osijek II
- NK Kustosija
- Wadi Degla
During his time in Egypt, Tolic gained valuable experience handling the intense and highly competitive environment of African football.
Although Wadi Degla did not become a title contender under his leadership, he successfully kept the club competitive in the Egyptian top division.
Many analysts believe these international experiences helped shape Tolic’s modern tactical approach and calm leadership style.
From Assistant Coach to Persib’s Main Leader
Igor Tolic arrived at Persib Bandung in mid-2024 following a recommendation from Bojan Hodak after assistant coach Goran Paulic departed ahead of the 2024/2025 Liga 1 season.
Behind the scenes, Tolic quickly became an influential figure within the squad.
He was heavily involved in:
- Designing training programs
- Managing player communication
- Tactical analysis
- Squad rebuilding strategies
Tolic even stepped in to lead the team during several matches when Bojan Hodak was unavailable due to suspension or health reasons.
One of his most memorable moments came during Persib’s dramatic victory against PSM Makassar, where he successfully managed the team from the sidelines.
He also reportedly played a major role in Persib’s foreign player overhaul ahead of the 2025/2026 season, a gamble that ultimately resulted in another championship-winning campaign.
Persib Enter New Era With High Expectations
For the first time in his career at Persib, Igor Tolic will now lead the team as the main decision-maker rather than as Bojan Hodak’s trusted assistant.
The challenge ahead is enormous.
Maintaining Persib’s championship mentality while dealing with increasing expectations from supporters and rivals will test Tolic’s leadership immediately.
However, with a strong squad foundation, continuity in management, and Bojan Hodak still involved at the executive level, Persib appear determined to build a sustainable football dynasty rather than merely defend titles season by season.
For Bobotoh supporters, the question now is whether Igor Tolic can continue the golden era—or perhaps create an even bigger legacy of his own.
